Locating offenders: Introducing the reverse spatial patterning approach

چکیده
Current strategies for locating where offenders live either focus exclusively on individual suspects or generalize to entire neighborhoods. However, better estimates of are located may improve models the ecological distribution crime, and forecasts locations future crime incidents. We propose a novel reverse spatial patterning (RSP) strategy that based events. rely distance decay function – consistent finding do not travel far commit Hipp's (2016) general theory patterns, work backwards from actual events make predictions about in subsequent years. then use these predicting locations. create two versions RSP: one which assumes everyone is equally likely offend, another creates an estimate assuming disproportionate offending across persons. test effectiveness our proposed measures using offense arrest data St. Petersburg, FL, assess how well they predict location (proxied by arrestees) find evidence RSP provides also incidents variety types compared existing strategies. The approach useful creating live, allow These will more efficient allocation police resources targeted suppression efforts.

Introducing the Elasticity of Spatial Data
The data quality of a vector spatial data can be assessed using the data contained within one or more data warehouses. Spatial consistency includes topological consistency, or the conformance to topological rules (Hadzilacos & Tryfona, 1992, Rodríguez, 2005). Detection of inconsistencies in vector spatial data is an important step for improvement of spatial data quality (Redman, 1992; Veregin, ...
متن کاملGardening in the desert: a spatial optimization approach to locating gardens in rapidly expanding urban environments
BACKGROUND Food access is a global issue, and for this reason, a wealth of studies are dedicated to understanding the location of food deserts and the benefits of urban gardens. However, few studies have linked these two strands of research together to analyze whether urban gardening activity may be a step forward in addressing issues of access for food desert residents. METHODS The Phoenix, ...
متن کاملBodley’s approach in introducing the Prophet of Islam (PBUH)
Ronald Victor Courtenay Bodley (1892-1970), the English Islamic studies scholar, has studied the life of the Prophet (PBUH) based on the social evolution theory and the environmental effects of Saudi Arabia on the prophet in the book of The Messenger: the life of Mohammad. He experienced living with the Arabs to understand the living conditions of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). This paper by usin...
متن کاملA Generative Model of Offenders' Spatial Behaviour
The relationship between distance travelled to an offence and frequency of offending has traditionally been expressed as a (downward-sloping) decay function and such a curve is typically used to fit empirical data. It is proposed here that a decay function should be viewed as a probability density function. It is then possible to construct generative models to assign probabilities to suspects f...
متن کاملLocating spatial thinking in teaching practice
The focus of this editorial is on the potential of spatial thinking in teaching, both within spatially-enabled disciplines such as geography, environmental and earth science, and more broadly within the sciences and humanities. Although a persuasive argument has been made for the value of spatial thinking and GIS within a broader research context (e.g., Goodchild & Janelle, 2004 for the social ...
